Long winters have a way of stirring my anticipation for spring. While the cold hush of winter is settled over the earth, I find it hard to picture branches sprouting new life. But as clockwork, spring subtly makes a return. Once more, the bleak winter sky begins to lighten and the sun peaks out from behind thick clouds. The light breeze sends the low notes of the mourning dove into the fresh air. Buds are breaking free from frost. While winter left a mark, creation bounces back with a new hope, whispering winter’s end and pointing to a new horizon.
Maybe spring reflects what we experience day to day. Maybe God is giving us a front row seat to see how he turns each season of our lives into something beautiful.
I find rest in knowing
(1) Each season has an end. Spring will cry victory over winter. We serve a God who loves to bless us with seasons of renewal and healing, and even more so, who promises us an unfading Kingdom bursting with light.
(2) Each season has a purpose. What we see as hopeless, is what God uses to refine and shape us to bear more fruit. When we feel far, He is beckoning us closer. When we are waiting, He is refining. If we watch, we will see a garden growing out of dry ground.
(3) Each season has beauty. Maybe the most beautiful part of our lives, is not in the changing of seasons, but in the constancy of God. Perhaps it is not change that we crave, but hope. Hope not in the healing, but in the Healer. Staking our hope in a new season of life is not enough. Just as spring will seamlessly slip into winter, so we will continue to experience long, hard seasons while we are on earth. While our hearts may yearn for healing, what we truly long for is a Healer. He is what makes every season of our lives beautiful.
All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change, at all
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found?
Could a garden come out from this ground, at all?
You make beautiful thingsGungor, Beautiful Things
